Lens choice is essential to capture a sharp, full-screen close-up. If you use a zoom NIKKOR with a capacity of close to telephoto zoom at the end of the focal length and adjust your image. Be aware of the focusing distance of the lens you use, if you closer to your subject to the limit allows, you will not be able to get a sharp image. For the ultimate capacity close to the point, consider a Micro-Nikkor lens. Available in focal lengths of 60mm, 105mm and 200mm, they are specially designed for close-up photography, check here.
If you use a NIKKOR lens with image stabilization (it will have an RV, Vibration Reduction, an indication), set the VR to ensure the most images. If you have a tripod, use it, and make sure VR is off.
